Man was boiling mad over lobster

A Fitchburg man who didn't like the way water was being boiled for a lobster dinner was arrested on charges that he attacked the cook and threatened to kill her Sunday evening, police said.

Wayne E. Robertson, 55, 4 Laflamme Place, was charged with aggravated assault and battery, two counts assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer, and threatening to commit a crime.


Robertson apparently asked a female friend to cook him lobster at a High Rock Road home. While waiting for the water to boil, he told the woman she wasn't doing it correctly, Capt. Linda Swears said. Woman Steals 7 Frozen Lobster Tails (video)

Florida woman really wanted those lobster tails. She stole 7 FROZEN, yes… frozen,  lobster tails by stuffing them in her pants! That had to be a little uncomfortable not to mention arctic feeling. Nichole Ann Reed is now facing petit theft charges after shoplifting from Publix supermarket. 

A central Florida woman faces petty theft charges after officials say she stuffed seven frozen lobster tails in her pants and walked out of a Publix supermarket without paying for them.

A loss prevention officer at the DeLand Publix told police he watched 30-year-old Nichole Ann Reed put the lobster tails into her pants on Wednesday evening. He says she walked around the store before leaving.

Police found her about an hour later. Reed told them she went to the store with the intention of stealing the lobster tails, which were valued at $83.99. According to a police report, she said she planned to trade the lobster with a friend to either go to a Chinese buffet or get the prescription pain medication Dilaudid.

She posted $250 bail.

ABC lobster news - Lobster industry sceptical about tourism plans

Professional Rock Lobster fishermen working near the Abrolhos islands, off the Geraldton coast, say they're concerned about potential tourist accommodation being set up along side their fishing camps.

Late last week Premier Colin Barnett said he intended to examine ways to increase tourism access, to a number of sites in Western Australia, including the islands.

Abrolhos Islands Professional Fishermen's Association president Terry Mouchemore, says while the industry isn't overly concerned about tourism development, he expects most wouldn't want tourist accommodation on islands with existing fishing camps.Continue reading...

Nova Scotia Fisheries Minister Keith Colwell says his department has been speaking with processors and fishermen in an undisclosed area of the province that is considering taking on a quality control program this year.

Chef Alison Barshak was the chef at Neil Stein’s Striped Bass when Esquire magazine declared it the best new restaurant in the entire country in 1994.

She told Victoria Fiorillo, Philadelphia magazine,  that while she's given up her chef's whites, she's still working in the industry. "I create unique seafood items for retail and restaurants," says Barshak. "I also have a patent pending on a lobster tail product which I am bringing to market."

My love affair with lobster began as a very small person, sitting at my grandparent’s picnic table. My mom’s parents lived on the north shore of Long Island, and we were lucky enough to visit once a year for a week or two in the summer. From their screened-in deck, we could watch the boats on Long Island Sound, and the sun sinking as we ate our lobster dinner. Continue

Canadian Lobster Fishery Shutdown

The Canadian lobster fishing season is coming to a standstill along some parts of the coast.  In Nova Scotia, dealers have stopped buying lobsters and lobstermen in P.E.I. have been told to tie up their boats.  The shutdown seems to be happening for several reasons.
In Nova Scotia, supply is outstripping demand.

  The good weather along with healthy catches has led to more lobster being brought into the docks than the dealers can handle.  The lobster market after Mother's Day tends to be on the slow side and the dealers have not been able to shift enough of the catch.  The result is that their pounds have reached capacity.

Lobster season in Belize runs from June 15th 2014 to midnight on the 14th of February, 2015. The season is closed from mid-Feb to mid -June to allow for conservation of the species as this is the mating/spawning season.

Its scientific name is “Paneluris Argus” and it belongs to the family of crustaceans. In Belize, however, we call it lobster or crayfish. Elsewhere it goes by the name warm water spiny lobster, rock lobster or Caribbean lobster to distinguish it from its larger and better-known cousin found in the deep cold waters off Canada and the northeastern United States. But whatever you call this elusive creature its importance to the economy of Belize cannot be overstated. Continue

ROCKLAND, Maine — Maine Lobster Festival officials expressed dismay Monday night after the City Council decided it would no longer waive the fees for the organization to use city property.

The council voted 4-1 against a proposal to waive $14,250 in fees for use of waterfront property that has been the home of the city’s premier summer festival for 66 years.
The vote came after festival officials pleaded with the council to continue to waive the fees as it has always done. The 67th annual Maine Lobster Festival is scheduled for July 30 through Aug. 3. Continue reading.

Lobster Fisherman Dies After Medical Emergency

A Rhode Island-bound lobster fisherman died early Monday morning despite being brought to shore by a crew from U.S. Coast Guard Station Shinnecock and rushed to Southampton Hospital.

Crew members on the 57-foot-long Lady Clare of South Kingstown called Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound at about 9 p.m. Sunday and reported that a crewman was having difficulty breathing, Coast Guard spokeswoman Jetta Disco said Tuesday morning. The Port Judith-bound vessel was 31 nautical miles south of the Shinnecock Inlet at the time, Ms. Disco said, and was told to head north to meet a Shinnecock crew that was en route.

The two vessels met, and the Coast Guard transported the man, whom officials have not identified, to the marina at Oakland’s Restaurant, where an ambulance was waiting to take him to Southampton Hospital. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Ms. Disco did not release the man’s name, age or hometown, and said the Coast Guard would not disclose the cause of death.

OK, so much for that experiment. Darden Restaurants Inc., owner of Red Lobster and Olive Garden, this week announced it is shutting down the six combined units of those two restaurants it has been experimenting with.

They are located in Thomasville, Waycross and Brunswick, GA; Beaufort, SC; Wilkesboro, NC, and Palm Coast FL.

The experimental venues are physically connected and shared kitchen, bar and business backroom operations, unlike side-by-side Red Lobster and Olive Garden locations such as on Wolf Road in Colonie which is a commonplace design. Continue reading

Lobster fishermen have begun another season without knowing how much they'll be paid for their catch

Mike McGeoghegan, president of the P.E.I. Fishermen's Association, said last spring fishermen would never again haul traps without knowing the price, but the season started as scheduled last week without a published price.

Last fall, Fisheries Minister Ron MacKinley said he wanted to run a pilot project on P.E.I. to have the price set in advance. The province paid a facilitator to sit down with fishermen and processors in a series of meetings. MacKinley said even though no price was set, trust was built between the two sides and so it wasn't a wasted effort.

"We had a facilitator in place, both sides all came together," he said.
"Let's hope this is a good price this spring.  But it's a working exercise (considering the) major dispute we had last year, and bringing them down and sitting at the same table. You take baby steps before you take giant steps." Continue reading

Rule change for processing lobster

The Maine Department of Marine Resources is considering a change that would allow licensed lobster processors to process lobster from the shell without holding a separate lobster meat permit.

The agency said in a statement that the change would mean lobster processor license holders would not have to purchase the $159 annual lobster meat permit. The state also said the change would allow the processors to streamline operations.

The state had 15 lobster processing license holders last year and has issued seven licenses this year. The license allows the holders to process lobsters in the shell, but not out.

The state is accepting comments about the proposal until June 6. Comments can be mailed to dmr.rulemaking@maine.gov.
