Seasons 52 In Santa Monica Serves Up Everything Under 475 Calories

The Branzino.
When at least half the world resolves to “eat healthier this year,” it’s great to see that we don’t have to do it at home. Luckily, it appears as though restaurants have taken notice that if they want to see us at their tables, then they’ll have to be able to offer a few items on every menu that won’t sabotage the battle of the bulge.

And then I met the menu at Seasons 52, which has various locations throughout the U.S., and most recently two locations in Los Angeles (Santa Monica and Century City) and boasts that every single item on the menu is under 475 calories.
“Everything?” I ask the waiter, my eyebrow askew with skepticism. He nods and grins.
“Yes, everything.”
I wave my hand over the menu.

“Blackened Steak & Blue Cheese Flatbread? Grilled Jumbo Shrimp Cavatappi Pasta? Lamb T-Bone Chops? You’re telling me that if I eat the entire flatbread, it’s still under 475 calories??”
He promises me yes, and then made sure that I see the array of desserts in the form of “shot” sized delights such as Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse, Pecan Pie with Vanilla Mousse, and Meyer Lemon Pound Cake – all under 475 calories each, of course.
Given the Seasons 52 premise, I know I shouldn’t be surprised.

Named after the fact that the Seasons 52 menu is seasonal and changes weekly (sometimes daily), it also promises that every single item on the menu from appetizers to mains, desserts to drinks, are all under 475 calories even if you eat everything and lick your plate bare.
“But how much do you get,” I push my server. “Take this lobster and fresh mozzarella flatbread, for example. Is it a two-inch bite? What kind of portions of something so rich can you actually expect to get for under 475 calories?”

“It’s huge, actually,” my server replies. “And that’s the thing – we don’t use butter in anything we cook. Just one meal and you’ll see that when you utilize actual techniques to instill flavor such as roasting, braising, and marinating, you don’t need to fry or drench in butter to get great taste.”
I point out that there’s a filet mignon with mashed potatoes.
“You can really make that for under 475 calories?” I ask.
I can tell he’s explained it every-which way he has ever had to, and at this point all he can do is recommend me in to a spread that will speak for itself.
Since I’m there to prove a point, I want to try the “most unbelievably 475 calorie” items available, and sample an array of items from each section of the menu.
“People are usually the most surprised by the flatbreads and the stuffed mushrooms,” my server tells me. “Also, any of the meats ‘bone-in, as well as the vegetarian tasting plate.”
Taking my server’s cue and ordering to test and impress, I prepare for the following:
Blackened Steak & Blue Cheese Flatbread – cremini mushrooms, spinach, caramelized onion.
Oak-Grilled Maine Lobster Tail – served with melted lemon butter.
Dungeness Crab, Roasted Shrimp and Spinach Stuffed Mushrooms – under parmesan panko crust.
Winter Vegetarian Tasting – quinoa citrus salad, soft taco, seasonal vegetables, cedar-roasted tofu, mango chutney.
Caramelized Grilled Sea Scallops – roasted asparagus, sun dried-tomato-mushroom pearl pasta.
New Zealand Venison Chop – venison ragout, broccolini, roasted peppers, truffled mashed potatoes.

Lobster Industry Summit

Lobster Levy Endorsed During Industry Summit

Some rare unity within the fishing industry will help market lobster around the world. Fishermen, buyers, shippers and processors all endorsed a levy to help promote lobster in new markets.

A great combo—1 1/2 lb live Maine lobster & 8 oz. filet mignon
and chilled extra large jumbocooked shrimp with fresh cocktail sauce.

The levy will support creating a generic marketing plan to promote Canadian lobster as a premium product. The consensus was reached during an industry summit in Halifax. It was hosted by the three Maritime fisheries ministers and was attended by more than 200 industry members. Fisheries Minister Keith Colwell says he is encouraged by the co-operation and that the ministers received great feedback on important issues. The two day summit wrapped up Thursday.

Lobster Industry News

Industry will ‘move forward’ on lobster levy

Fisheries ministers from the Maritimes say they hope a levy to market the lobster industry will be in place by the end of the year, but some consultation is still needed with fisheries organizations.
The levy would see fishermen and the onshore side of the industry each pay one cent per pound of lobster caught to help market their product, which has been plagued by poor prices.
Nova Scotia Fisheries Minister Keith Colwell said there’s consensus among most fishermen and processors to act.

“There’s a willingness to do this now,” Colwell said Thursday after a meeting on the lobster industry ended in Halifax. “There will be some kickback from some individuals that complain about everything, and that’s fine. We’re going to move forward.”

The Big Deal Package

Colossal five to six pound fresh maine lobster. Includes a steel
cracker, fork, wetnap, and bib wrapped in a fine red and white checkered napkin.

The levy was proposed last November by a three-member panel that reviewed the lobster industry and it’s estimated about $2.5 million a year could be collected through the fee.
Colwell and his counterparts from New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island met for two days this week in Halifax with industry representatives at meetings to discuss slumping prices.
Last year, frustrated lobster fishermen tied up their boats at wharves for days to draw attention to their struggling industry.

Our Maine/Canadian lobster tails

One thing I have grown tired of is crowds. I have never loved crowds actually but my tolerance seems to be getting lower and lower. So when Valentine’s Day fell on Friday, BR and I looked at each other and decided to have a night in and have dinner on another night of the week.

I had the menu all planned with BR when suddenly, BR emailed me telling me he had a late meeting. And then the grocery provider emailed me to tell me they couldn’t fulfill my dinner order… until 8pm!
Must. Not. Cry.

I jet out of work early to accommodate my new, EARLY, dinner delivery slot. I prepped our lobster tails, crab cakes, and scrubbed the potatoes while the cupcakes reached room temperature.
I anxiously waited for BR to come home so we could feast and Binge Watch House of Cards (!!!!).

And when he walked in with roses, cold champagne and chocolates, every tiny thing that went wrong earlier in the day seemed so distant and forgotten…

and then we went IN on those lobsters!

Florida Keys lobster season

Florida Keys lobster season closing Monday

One of the most successful Florida Keys lobster seasons in recent years comes to a close Monday.
As the eight-month season winds down, the spring prices paid by buyers for live lobsters sold to the
Asian market may hit $16 per fresh lobster pound or higher. “The Chinese have a live lobster market that can and will pay the higher price,” Cramer said. “
The frozen market cannot compete with the prices for live lobster.” Read more here
