For months, we’ve been happily anticipating the arrival of Slapfish Laguna Beach. Last winter, the crazy-popular HuntingtonBeach restaurant chose to expand its operation into the Laguna Beach “food court” area on Broadway (just next to Carmelita’s), and they’re finally opening this Tuesday, May 6th.

I just spent the evening at Slapfish in a pre-opening event, and can’t tell you anything about the food YET as I’ll be featuring a large write-up in next Friday’s StuNewsLaguna. Lobster recipe: Lobster salad

Easy fake lobster salad ( 205 calories, 22 carbs, 12 protein and 8 fat )


1 pack Trans Ocean chunk style lobster classic8oz
2tbsp light mayo
3oz light cream cheese
1tsp lemon juice
1/2 cup frozen peas
1/2 cup frozen corn
1/8tsp white pepper
1/8tsp garlic powder
1/8tsp opinion powder
1tsp dried dill weed
1/8tsp salt or to taste

Dice the lobster flavored surimi and put in mixing bowl. Add all other ingredients and mix well. Let rest for 10 minutes. Stir again and serve. Great for wraps, sandwiches and topping salad greens. Makes 3 3/4 cup servings

Maine Lobster Boat Races 2014 Schedule

The 2014 Maine Lobster Boat Races Schedule was published a few months back but somehow I missed it.  Below are the key dates as well as additional information on some of the villages which host the races.

June 14th: Boothbay, Maine -
Boothbay is one of the key races in the circuit and the town and harbor are beautiful to visit.  If you live in Southern Maine or are traveling from out of state, this is an excellent lobster boat race to visit.  This is a points race.


June 15th:  Rockland, Maine - This is a points race.


June 29th:  Bass Harbor, Maine

This is a points race.


July 5th:  Moosabec Reach, Maine -
The Jonesport Beals lobster boat race is perhaps the most iconic race of the season.  This is because lobster boat racing as we know it today originated in Jonesport and Beals. Pezzi Pasta, Lobster, Mussels, Brandy Tarragon ReductionINGREDIENTS: 
5oz Par cooked Lobster meat
5ea mussels
1ea shallot
1clove garlic
Zest of one lemon
3oz brandy
½ C Cream
1T butter
8oz fresh pasta

Name of restaurant: Petrossian

The happy hour: The West Hollywood caviar emporium and cafe hosts a food-focused happy hour Monday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m., including specials for caviar served traditionally with blinis and vodka or Prosecco, as well as small bites such as pomme frites with caviar aioli, a mini lobster roll with sea urchin and caviar, caviar burger slider and potato tart with creme fraiche and 20 grams of Transmontanus caviar. The featured drink special is the caviar martini with Akvinta Organic Vodka, dry vermouth, caviar-stuffed olive, cocktail onion and a pressed-caviar cube. Prices are $8 (for frites) to $24 for snacks and $6 to $8 for cocktails and wine specials.

Best bang for your buck: Caviar for two, with 30 grams of Transmontanus caviar, creme fraiche, blini, toast points and two glasses of La Marca Prosecco or Akvinta Organic Vodka. It's $49 (so $24.50 each), a bargain for that amount of caviar and accouterments. 

What are you drinking? Ice-cold flutes of Akvinta vodka.

Who’s at the next table? A couple engaged in a tete-a-tete over caviar and blini.

Uh-oh: You might be enticed by the lobster rolls and sliders, but stick to the simpler menu items (caviar for two, potato tart with caviar and caviar deviled eggs) to better enjoy the caviar.
Service: There's no bar per se; you'll be seated at a table. It's fancy.

lobster.jpgThe population of baby lobsters appears to have declined by nearly 50 percent from 2007 levels.
The past several years have been kind to lobster lovers. Record catches in Maine and elsewhere in New England have led to low wholesale prices and a resultant profusion of lobster deals in restaurants.
Troubling news this spring, however, from Maine's Department of Marine Resources.
The population of baby lobsters appears to have declined by nearly 50 percent from 2007 levels.

Divers from the University of Maine annually survey the lobster population in the Gulf of Maine, and counts of young lobsters this year are down dramatically. The young lobsters studied take about eight seasons to reach legal size. Continue

East Hampton Sandwich Co., located right by Southern Methodist University in Snider Plaza, definitely looks like a sandwich shop that could exist in the Hamptons -- well, to someone who has never been to the Hamptons (read: me), at least.
