Maine marine officials: Lobster population in decline

The past several years have been kind to lobster lovers. Record
catches in Maine and elsewhere in New England have led to low wholesale
prices and a resultant profusion of lobster deals in restaurants.
Troubling news this spring, however, from Maine's Department of Marine Resources.
The population of baby lobsters appears to have declined by nearly 50 percent from 2007 levels.
Divers from the University of Maine annually survey the lobster population in the Gulf of Maine, and counts of young lobsters this year are down dramatically. The young lobsters studied take about eight seasons to reach legal size. Continue
