50 years ago, 1964: Favorite
Fisheries, 235 E. Railroad St., was entered and approximately 430
pounds of seafood, valued at $468.50, were taken. 250 pounds of fish,
100 pounds of lobster tails, a 50-pound case of scampi, and 30 pounds of
frog legs were among the items stolen.
25 years ago, 1989: The nation's worst
oil spill, now bigger than Rhode Island, prompted Exxon Corp. to
publicly apologize amid threats by Alaska Gov. Steve Cowper to shut down
the trans-Alaska oil pipeline unless the oil industry did more to
protect his pristine coastline.
10 years ago, 2004: For the 14th
consecutive year, Sandusky was named a Tree City US.A. by the National
Arbor Day Foundation. To become a Tree City, a community must have a
tree board, a tree care ordinance; a comprehensive forestry program and
an Arbor Day observance.
