Maine whale wall could be endangered

Richmond-based Shucks Maine Lobster wants to convert more than 18,000 square feet of the city-owned building into a lobster processing plant. The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1eImccT) reported the firm's plans include cutting through the wall to add a loading dock and entrance.

Shucks Maine president John Hathaway told the Press Herald he hopes to save as much of the mural as possible.

Hundreds of people gathered on the Maine State Pier to watch artist Robert Wyland and volunteers spray-paint the wall in June 1993. The mural depicts an 82-foot-long finback whale, two minke whales, two bottlenose dolphins, and several Atlantic white-sided dolphins.
