National Lobster Newberg Day

March 25th is National Lobster Newberg Day.

Lobster Newberg, (sometimes Lobster Newburg) originated in the United States in 1876. It is a seafood dish made with lobster, butter, cream, cognac, sherry, eggs, and cayenne pepper.
The story goes that Ben Wenberg, a sea captain in the fruit trade, went to Delmonico’s Restaurant in New York City (where he frequented) and demonstrated a new way of cooking lobster that he had learned.

It has never been discovered where Wenberg, himself, learned of this dish. The manager, Charles Delmonico, loved it and added it to the menu as Lobster à la Wenberg. It quickly became a popular dish.

Well, Wenberg and Delmonico got into an argument (nobody knows what it was about) which resulted in Wenberg’s banishment from the establishment and the removal of the dish from the menu. However, patron’s of Delmonico’s continued asking for the dish. The manager ended up putting it back on the menu under the anagram Lobster à la Newberg, which is now simply Lobster Newberg.
